BUILDING ECONOMIC RESILIENCE: A ROADMAP TO ALLEVIATE FOOD INSECURITY IN DURHAM COUNTY’S BLACK COMMUNITY LIVING BELOW THE FEDERAL POVERTY LINE

Improving food security among those living below the Federal Poverty Level is a crucial step in addressing Durham County’s public health. Black households are disproportionately affected by food insecurity which impacts their health, nutrition, and quality of life. In response to this health inequity, we propose the implementation of a mobile produce market (MPM) in areas of food apartheid in Durham County. The MPM will improve food availability and access by bringing fresh produce to neighborhoods in low access areas of Durham. The MPM will also address food literacy by providing food preparation education and recipes for available produce.
