The Knights Templar were founded in 1118 AD. By the year 1260 they numbered 20,000. Usually of noble birth, the Knights adhered to a strict moral code of poverty, chastity and obedience. They are notable for the introduction of chivalry and Holy War. They also played a major role in the development of Christianity as a pan-European religion
