The magnetic field around various geometries of conductors can be observed using iron filings. While the current is running through the wire, iron filings are sprinkled onto a plastic sheet through which the wire runs, and the plate is gently tapped, producing the iron filing configuration which illustrates the magnetic field in the plane of the plastic sheet, as in Figure 1 for the case of the solenoid
