A spool consists of a thin rod wrapped with string at each end with a heavy concentric disc at the center of the rod, as shown in Figure 1. The spool is released and allowed to fall, converting some of its initial gravitational potential energy into rotational kinetic energy. When it unwinds to the end of the string, its angular momentum causes it to wind up again in the opposite direction, converting its rotational kinetic energy back into gravitational potential energy
