Os tecidos mineralizados dos vertebrados são a principal testemunha da existência de espécies extintas ao longo do tempo profundo. Por sua preservação no registro fóssil, são importantes para o estudo histórico da biodiversidade e dos diferentes ambientes da Terra. Dentre esses tecidos, o esmalte dentário é o que melhor se preserva, devido à hipermineralização quando comparado aos outros tecidos dentários e ossos.
