Study of vulnerable habitats and species and their interaction with fisheries activities in the identification and establishment of marine protected areas

El establecimiento de una red coherente de áreas marinas protegidas (AMP) se basa en el conocimiento científico más detallado posible de los valores ambientales de una zona, en el estudio de los usos y actividades antrópicos que en ella se desarrollan, y en el análisis de la interacción entre ambos. Partiendo de esta premisa, esta tesis defiende que los estudios de alta resolución de los hábitats y especies de interés para la RN2000 mediante modelos de densidades de las principales especies formadoras de hábitats, combinados con el análisis del beneficio económico de la pesca de profundidad, son herramientas fundamentales para el diseño y actualización de los planes de gestión de las AMP. Solo así será posible satisfacer tanto las necesidades de protección de los hábitats vulnerables como las del sector pesquero.The establishment of a coherent network of marine protected areas (MPAs) is based on the most detailed scientific knowledge possible of the environmental values of an area, on the study of the uses and anthropic activities that take place, and on the analysis of the interaction between them. Based on this premise, this thesis argues that high-resolution studies of habitats and species of interest for NR2000 using density models of the main habitat-forming species, combined with the analysis of the economic benefit of deep-sea fishing, are fundamental tools for the design and updating of MPA management plans. Only in this way will it be possible to satisfy both the protection needs of vulnerable habitats and those of the fishing sector
