The operating range of axial compressors is limited by the presence of unstable flows originating in the clearance between the rotor and the casing. These instabilities can lead to rotating stall and surge, considerably reducing the compressors' operating range. These phenomena also prevent the compressor from achieving high compression ratios and higher efficiencies. Flow control systems therefore offer a solution for increasing surge margin by means of passive or active devices (requiring an external power source). Recent studies have shown for a given tip gap size that active control by injecting air upstream of the rotor leading edge can delay the onset of stall and increase surge margin.
