The demand for laser welding of materials with high thermal and electrical conductivity, especially copper and its alloys, increases due to its key role in electrical applications. Laser welding operations on these materials is a challenging process due to the relatively high thermal conductivity at room temperature (390 W/m/K) as well as a high optical reflectivity at classical laser wavelength used in industry (YAG). This configuration is well known to induce hydrodynamical instabilities and promotes the generation of defects such as porosities or spatters during the process.
