Students’ Perception of Teachers’ Grammar Teaching Approach

Grammar is an important aspect in language learning. Grammar can help people to understand the meaning of a sentence. In teaching grammar, there are some grammar approaches but this study only concerns two grammar approaches which are deductive approach and inductive approach. In Grammar teaching, it seems that there are some issues related with the role of grammar and what best approaches should be applied in teaching grammar. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to answer which grammar teaching approach is done by teachers in teaching grammar to the students. The participants of this study were 34 students from Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana. In this study, a questionnaire was used as the data collecting instrument. The researcher analyzed the data based on the result of the class observation and questionnaires with the table analysis to see how the students perceive the approaches done by their teacher in teaching grammar. In this study, all of the teachers use the deductive approach to teach grammar to their students and majority of students agree with the deductive approach. Students believe a deductive approach can help students to understand better, to memorize the rules better, to overcome difficulties in grammar, and to avoid grammar mistakes.
