Based on a survey of French nonprofit organizations that was administered through local authorities, this article updates the main quantitative data on the French nonprofit sector (organizational profile, finances, paid employment and voluntary work). Three main types of nonprofit organizations are identified and analyzed: organizations that serve a public policy objective, advocacy groups and clubs. The author highlights the key trends in the French nonprofit sector from 1999 to 2005 and notes in particular that the share of nonprofit organizations in the economy continued to grow faster than GDP.
