Au cours des années 1920 et 1930, l’expansion du sport dans les centres urbains fut à la fois la cause et le résultat de l’accroissement du nombre des installations. Une étude portant sur dix villes de l’Ontario révèle que ces installations furent construites et entretenues en partie grâce aux fonds publics et en partie grâce aux capitaux du secteur privé et des sociétés coopératives.
