Les curiosités animales de l’art contemporain

International audienceContemporary art presents some strange animal entities which have for a commonpoint with the animalia and mirabilia of the European curiosities of the XVIth and XVIIthcenturies their status as exhibition objects or as collections destined for eventual buyers. But,the contemporary summary version of this new zoological reconfiguration by artists is notnourished by passed myths, it is inspired by or has experienced technobiological practices oflaboratories. For this reason, the living dream chimeras which come out of these laboratoriesreverse the systems of classification of the living and radically mix up the frontiers betweenspecies, anticipating our relations with the new alternatives. And so it is with the laboratorydream chimeras incarnated by the fluorescent rabbit, Alba, by Eduardo Kac, the frogs withtranslucent bodies from Brandon Ballangée or the butterflies recreated by Marta de Menezes.Other artists set the scene with animals that are laboratory victims of cloning or transgenicpractices (Marion Laval and Benoît Mangin, Katy High). As for Thomas Grünfeld he changesthis teratological production by producing a series of Misfits, embodied strange, sympathetictaxidermists’ hybrides.Bio-artists, fascinated by the very production of the living, work, in vivo, in the depths ofanimal cells and the mechanism which animates them. By experimentation with the potentialtechnics of contemporary biology, they are questioning their limits. Other artists show theirbiological-futuristic ‘mirabilia’, in order to show up the drifting of a society looking for a newlife style dictated by the technic reprogramming of the living. We will show that this makingof a ‘tailor made’ world of animals tends both to accentuate our relationship to mortalitythrough the animal and to domesticate the living dream chimeras that science embodies.L’art contemporain présente d’étranges entités animales qui, ont un point communavec les animalia et les mirabilia des cabinets de curiosités européens des XVIe et XVIIesiècles : leur statut d’objets d’exposition ou de collection destinés à d’éventuels acheteurs.Mais l’abrégé contemporain de ce nouvel univers zoologique reconfiguré par les artistes ne senourrit pas des mythes du passé, il s’inspire ou expérimente des pratiques technobiologiquesréalisées en laboratoire. À ce titre, les chimères vivantes qui sortent des laboratoiresrenversent les systèmes de classification du vivant et brouillent radicalement les frontièresentre les espèces anticipant nos rapports à de nouvelles altérités. Il en va ainsi des chimères delaboratoire incarnées par la lapine fluorescente Alba d’Eduardo Kac, les grenouilles au corpstranslucide de Brandon Ballangée ou des papillons re-naturés de Marta de Menezes. D’autresartistes mettent en scène des animaux de laboratoire victimes des pratiques de clonage ou detransgénèse (Marion Laval et Benoît Mangin, Katy High). Pour sa part, Thomas Grünfelddétourne cette production tératologique en réalisant une série de Misfits incarnés pard’étranges et sympathiques hybrides taxidermisés.Les bio-artistes, fascinés par la fabrique du vivant interviennent in vivo, au coeur même de lacellule animale et des mécanismes qui l’animent. En expérimentant le potentiel technique dela biologie contemporaine, ils en interrogent ses limites. D’autres artistes mettent en spectacleces mirabilia biologico-futuristes pour souligner les dérives d’une société en proie à unnouveau mode de vie dicté par la reprogrammation technique du vivant. Nous montrerons quecette fabrique d’un monde animal sur mesure tend à la fois à accentuer notre relationmortifère à l’animal et à domestiquer les chimères que la science incarne
