La penúltima curva de Paposo. Agentividad técnica, social e histórica de una infraestructura vial

International audienceThe article studies the penultimate curve of the Paposo slope, which connects the coast with the interior plateau of the Atacama Desert. The curve, designed in 1870, was asphalted in 2010 and has since been a critical point for road accidents in the area. The article examines the curve in historical terms, in the light of the different mining cycles, and from the point of view of its contemporary materialities - oratories, roadside shrines, design - and from the point of view of the litigation and press material accompanying the main tragedies. The main hypothesis of the article is that the curve adopts its own agency, different from that of the road, a point of negotiation between mechanical, budgetary, legal, symbolic, and social forces. Finally, the article draws attention to the avoidability of these tragedies: building a highway is not the same as paving a cart road.El artículo estudia la penúltima curva de la cuesta de Paposo, que comunica el litoral con la meseta interior del desierto de Atacama. Diseñada en 1870, esta curva fue asfaltada en 2010 y desde entonces ha sido un punto crítico de siniestralidad vial en la zona. El artículo examina históricamente la curva, al alero de los distintos ciclos mineros, desde el punto de vista de sus materialidades contemporáneas –oratorios, animitas, diseño– y desde el punto de vista de los litigios y material de prensa que acompañan las principales tragedias. La hipótesis principal del artículo es que la curva adopta una agencia propia y se distingue del camino, actuando como punto de negociación para diversas fuerzas, ya sean mecánicas, presupuestarias, jurídicas, simbólicas o sociales. Por último, el artículo llama la atención sobre la evitabilidad de estas tragedias: construir una carretera no equivale a simplemente pavimentarun camino de carretas
