International audienceBased on the use of multiple sources (trade union, regional public administration, French government), this article contributes to a social history of civil servants, as yet little documented regarding the damage on public workers’ health. It examines the way in which issues relating to the establishment of Hygiene and Safety Committees (CHS) in the public administrations discussed, especially in the context of "State modernization" projects during the Mitterrand years. It also sheds a light on the recognition of asbestos exposure as a problem for civil servants.
