Solon is commonly credited with the conquest of Salamis by the Athenians. The sources relating to this episode are not without contradictions which historians often sought to eliminate by making choices and proposing multiple reconstructions. However, these inconsistencies vanish when one gives up reading the texts, and in the first place Plutarch’s Life of Solon, as narratives allowing us to reconstruct historical facts. The study of the various traditions relating to the exploits attributed to Solon at Salamis, and also to Peisistratus at Megara, shows that they all rely on the same scheme of stratagem which serves as an etiological narrative for rituals mobilizing young people in a set of cults relating to navigation.
