Does multilingualism in Europe just mean that everyone is learning English? In the first part of the symposium David Graddol will explore the changing nature of multilingualism in Europe and the new challenges this is now raising for national languages and national identities. In her session Dr Philida Schellekens will use the experience of migrants working in London to reflect on the language and other skills needed for social interaction and employment. In the third part of the symposium a roundtable will explore some of the burning issues in the current debate and the British Council's work in the area of multilingualism will be presented
