Parasympathetic nerves innervate the detrusor muscle of the urinary bladder, but a non-cholinergic component ofneurotransmission was recognised over 100 years ago (Langley & Anderson, 1895). Subsequently, ATP was identified asthe cotransmitter with acetylcholine (Kasakov & Burnstock, 1983).
