This book is mainly concerned with the robust numerical solution of convectionreaction-diffusion problems of the form e u + a . ?u + bu = f. In particular, the emphasis is on singularly perturbed problems where the coefficient of diffusion e is much smaller than |a| or |b|. Such problems arise in many areas of science and engineering, and they are well known to be difficult to solve numerically due to the presence of boundary layers that are very thin compared to the size of the domain.
