Practical training in pedestrian skills is known to be highly effective at improving the performance of children as young as 5 years of age. When conducted at the roadside,however, this training can be time-consuming, labour intensive, and subject to disruptionfrom poor weather and a lack of traffic situations of the types required. Training based on simulations offers a way round these difficulties, and experimental work suggests it has thepotential to yield learning of comparable levels to roadside training.
