Yunnan Province in China

"At present Yunnan Province in China tries to adapt itself to the new conditions created by the regional re-organization after the end of cold war. Coupled with an emergence of domestic tourists supported by the rapid economic growth particularly along the south eastern coast, the Province began to enjoy rising income by supplying service to visiting tourists. At the same time the Province tries to make use of its geographical location as a gate to South East Asia and also to South Asia. The potentialities are not exploited enough and various projects are under way to link Yunnan to Myammar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam by road, trade, ship transportation through Mekong river. New linkage with India in the south and Siberia in the north is also looked for. These changes would definitely have an impact on the conditions of minority nationalities in the Province, including Hui (muslims). The identification of Hui with muslims abroad is particularly important if you take into account the new circumstances in the Muslim world as a whole and the economic disparity between the east coast and inland areas in China.
