Durant la période précoloniale et les deux premiers siècles de son histoire coloniale, le Groenland eut la chasse au phoque comme économie de base. Cette chasse était pratiquée de deux façons différentes. Dans le sud du Groenland, où les eaux sont ouvertes toute l’année, la chasse au phoque en kayak régna. Dans le nord du Groenland, où les eaux sont couvertes de glace durant une grande partie de l’année, diverses formes de chasse au phoque sur la glace s’ajoutèrent à la chasse au kayak.
