In 2008, the editors led a 2-year study of a selection of students at five colleges in Illinois to assess how students approach libraries and research. Using anthropology and ethnography as the basis of their method, the researchers examined faculty, student, and librarian attitudes to research and learning, barriers to research, and the experiences of different types of students. Analysis of the different findings from the study is described, as are the libraries\u27 responses in the form of planned changes to improve. Supporting the research efforts of Hispanic college students and an analysis of the experience of first-generation college students are the subjects of separate chapters.
