Groundnut is one of the principal oilseeds in the world. It is cultivated on 24.8 million ha with a total production of 32.8 million t and an average productivity of 1.32 t ha-'. Developing countries account for 96.9% of the world groundnut area and 93.8% of total production. Production is concentrated in Asia (56.8% area and 66.5% production of the world) and Africa (38.0% area and 24.7% production).
