International audienceTraditional grape cultivars all proceed from the wild grape (Vitis sylvestris). Distinguishing between wild and cultivated vines (Vitis vinifera), often difficult when dealing with living plants, is only possible in archaeobotany by pip morphology. Identification of cultivated grape pips cannot be considered by itself as a fully safe diagnostic to ensure grape growing in a given area, but it is nevertheless an important feature. The two main archaeobotanical methods being applied to French wild and cultivated modern grape pips failed to deliver full satisfactory results.
