Préhistoire de l'archéologie numérique : des « Archives de typologie analytique » à une base de données des industries lithiques paléolithiques ouest-méditerranéennes

First stabilised in his PhD (1961), this approach was continuously developed by Laplace and his collaborators until the 2000s. The AT made it possible to systematically analyse and represent the properties of lithic tools. This mode of representation was neither entirely based on the use of numbers, nor entirely on the description in natural languages (French, Italian, etc.), but took the form of standardised sequences of characters associating numbers and abbreviations, which had to be composed by respecting a syntax and a lexicon. The growth of the AT was based on two journals, Dialektikê. Cahiers de typologie analytique (in France) and Archivio di tipologia analitica (in Italy). The latter published only data, formatted according to the principles of AT (accumulating nearly 56,000 objects described, from Italian, French and Spanish sites). It anticipated some current data publication formats, such as “supplementary materials”. The quantity and the rigorous standardisation of these data give them significant value as much for prehistoric archaeology, knowledge representation in the humanities, as for the history of sciences. The AT and Archivio were the subjects of a research stay at the Fondation des Treilles, which led to two results: 1) the submission of an article approaching the AT from the perspective of a conceptual history of science, addressing what grounds the identity of a scientific method; 2) initial results concerning the digitisation of the Archivio, from a sample of 245 lithic tools from the Poeymaü cave (Arudy, French Pyrenees) and having been integrated into the Virtual Poeymaü, an interactive web visualisation application.À partir de la fin des années 1950, l’archéologue Georges Laplace développa la « typologie analytique » (TA), une approche typologique des industries lithiques préhistoriques. D’abord stabilisée dans sa thèse de doctorat (1961), cette approche fut continuellement développée par Laplace et ses collaborateurs jusqu’aux années 2000. La TA permettait d’analyser et de représenter systématiquement les propriétés d’objets de pierre taillée préhistoriques. Ce mode de représentation ne reposait ni entièrement sur l’usage de nombres, ni entièrement sur les moyens descriptifs des langues naturelles (français, italien, etc.), mais prenait la forme de séquences de caractères standardisées associant nombres et abréviations, devant être composées en respectant une syntaxe et un lexique. Les travaux de TA s’appuyaient sur deux revues, Dialektikê. Cahiers de typologie analytique (en France) et l’Archivio di tipologia analitica (en Italie). L’Archivio ne publiait que des données, formatées selon les principes de TA (cumulant près de 56 000 objets décrits, issus de sites italiens, français et espagnols). Cette revue anticipait ainsi certains formats actuels numériques de publication de données, tels que les « matériaux supplémentaires ». La masse ainsi que la rigueur de la standardisation de ces données leur confèrent un intérêt exceptionnel tant pour l’archéologie préhistorique, la représentation des connaissances en sciences de l’homme, que l’histoire des sciences. Les travaux réalisés à propos de la TA et de l’Archivio lors de ce séjour d’études à la Fondation des Treilles ont abouti à deux résultats : 1) l’écriture d’un article abordant la TA dans les perspectives d’une histoire conceptuelle des sciences, interrogeant ce qui fonde l’identité d’une méthode scientifique ; 2) de premiers résultats concernant la numérisation de l’Archivio, relatifs à un échantillon de 245 objets de pierre taillée provenant de la grotte du Poeymaü (Arudy, Pyrénées-Atlantiques) et ayant été intégrés dans le Virtual Poeymaü, une application web interactive de visualisation
