Il était une fois dans l'ouest, l'oasis de Kharga à l'aube des temps pharaoniques

International audienceAlongside the trajectory from the emergence of predynastic cultures to the assertionof the Pharaonic State in the Nile Valley, communities in the Western Desert followeda singular path. In the Kharga oasis, the Kharga D phase extends over the 4th and3rd millennium BCE. After a first period when the cultural affinities within the NileValley seems strong, the typically oasian Sheikh Muftah cultural group is attested. Thisgroup, which until now has been identified only in the Dakhla oasis and its surroundings,possesses autonomous technical and cultural traditions that are perceptible within thelithic and ceramic industries. From Naqada III on, pottery imported from the Nile Valleyis found intermingled with local oasian productions in archaeological assemblages. Thesesustained interactions were facilitated by the relative geographical proximity of the tworegions. Expeditions mandated by the first Egyptian kings were assisted by the contributionof scouts from local communities.Parallèlement à la trajectoire qui va de l’émergence des cultures prédynastiques àl’affirmation de l’État pharaonique dans la vallée du Nil, les communautés du désertOccidental ont suivi un chemin singulier. Dans l’oasis de Kharga, la phase Kharga Ds’étend sur les IVe et IIIe millénaires BCE. Après un premier temps où la proximitéculturelle avec la vallée du Nil semble étroite, elle voit le développement du groupeculturel oasien Sheikh Muftah. Ce groupe n’était jusqu’ici identifié que dans l’oasisde Dakhla et ses abords, il s’exprime à travers des traditions techniques et culturellesautonomes perceptibles au sein des industries lithiques et céramiques. DèsNaqada III, des poteries importées de la vallée du Nil viennent se mêler aux productionslocales au sein des assemblages archéologiques. Ces interactions soutenuesont été facilitées par la relative proximité géographique des deux régions.Elles prennent notamment la forme d’expéditions mandatés par les premiers souverainségyptiens et facilitées par la contribution d’éclaireurs issus des communautéslocales
