International audienceAlongside the trajectory from the emergence of predynastic cultures to the assertionof the Pharaonic State in the Nile Valley, communities in the Western Desert followeda singular path. In the Kharga oasis, the Kharga D phase extends over the 4th and3rd millennium BCE. After a first period when the cultural affinities within the NileValley seems strong, the typically oasian Sheikh Muftah cultural group is attested. Thisgroup, which until now has been identified only in the Dakhla oasis and its surroundings,possesses autonomous technical and cultural traditions that are perceptible within thelithic and ceramic industries.
