International audienceAvailable data concerning Second Iron Age burial practices in the southern part of the Massif central are particularly incomplete and often come from early excavations. There are only 32 well-documented burials that can definitely be attributed to this period. Almost all of these are attributable to Hallstatt D2/D3 and the beginning of Early La Tène (La Tène). For this span, both in Haute Auvergne and in the Causses, cremation, usually placed in an earlier tumulus, is the dominant rite. Thereafter, setting aside the exceptional sites of Celles (Cantal) and Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux (Aveyron), the use of barrows seems to cease and burials themselves are absent until Romanization.
