International audienceThis monograph offers a detailed analysis of the architecture and decoration of the buildings in insula V of Herculaneum. Excavated between 1931 and 1938, this residential area occupies a floor space of about 3800 m2. The study is carried out in a diachronic perspective, in order to highlight all the successive transformations of the building and the ornatus of the houses. The choice of an analysis on the scale of the insula, allows us to consider the successive phases of subdivision and modifications of the plot of land. We can thus see that, far from remaining fixed, the limits of the dwellings fluctuated by grouping, merging or fragmenting buildings, according to the needs of their occupants.
