The study of tree branches has often been neglected in favour of that of tree trunks. However, their simple posture is an impressive challenge to gravity. Although they appear to be mechanically oversized, they can break under the pressure of a fluctuating environment. In most cases the causes are identified. But there are still situations where the mystery remains ; an excellent example of this is the phenomenon of summer breakage, where branches fall at the end of hot, windless days.
