The possibility of deaf schools: a defense of the school for the encounter with the world

This PhD thesis, produced on the research line of epistemological decoloniality, transgressive education and transformation practices from the Post Graduate Program in Education from the Federal University of Pelotas, sustains the premise that Deaf schools fulfills the role of launching students into the world, but weakens as a school when it is marked primarily by the identity marks of the deaf community and limits its responsibility to introduce the world to students to what is restricted to this community. The Brazilian sign language and the Portuguese written language are central to the organization of the schoolchildren, marked by a relationship much more in the order of identity and sameness than difference, plurality. To develop this research, we have adopted the approach of problematization, within the method movements observed on Michel Foucault’s studies, on which one is not seeking the knowledge, but creating, producing problems for the thought. Within this problematization approach, we have considered the problematic: what enables the Deaf school to be constituted as a school?, thus realizing what presently constitutes the Deaf school. We have used the concept of school that emerges from Comenius and is appropriated/developed by Jan Masschelein and Maarten Simons. This concept is sustained by Hannah Arendt’s studies about the teacher’s responsibility as the one that presents the world to the newcomers. For the analysis, we have used the matrices proposed by the Colombian researcher Oscar Saldarriaga in order to cross the students’ and teachers’ answers to the interviews with the Political- Pedagogical Projects and Regulations of the 13 Deaf schools on the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It was possible to perceive that the stand for the Deaf schools’ defense is associated to the particularities that constitutes them, fragilizing the schools’ plurality. While the teachers worry about the struggles of the external world, the students long for equality provided by the content and by the study itself. This thesis has sought to approximate, bring forward, and consider the Deaf school within the contemporary discussions about the school. We do not have the intention to compare it with other schools, but understand it, narrate it, and problematize it, as it is done with the other schools. We defend that which only the school can accomplish, that not even the community or any other space is capable of accomplishing: presenting the world to Deaf people.Esta pesquisa de doutorado, produzida na Linha de pesquisa epistemologias descoloniais, educação transgressora e práticas de transformação, do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Universidade federal de Pelotas sustenta a tese na qual a escola de surdos cumpre o papel de lançar os estudantes no mundo, mas se fragiliza enquanto escola quando é marcada prioritariamente pelas marcas identitárias da comunidade surda e limita sua responsabilidade de apresentar o mundo aos alunos ao que é restrito à esta comunidade. A língua brasileira de sinais e a língua portuguesa escrita são centrais na organização do escolar da escola, marcadas por uma relação muito mais da ordem da identidade e da mesmidade do que da diferença, da pluralidade. Para desenvolver este empreendimento de pesquisa adotouse uma atitude de problematização, filiada aos movimentos de métodos observados nos estudos de Michel Foucault, na qual não se está à busca do conhecimento, mas cria, produz problemas para o pensamento. Diante dessa atitude de problematização, buscou-se a partir da problemática: o que possibilita que a escola de surdos se constitua enquanto uma escola?, perceber o que constitui a escola de surdos no presente. Fez-se uso do conceito de escola que emerge em Comênio e é apropriado/desenvolvido por Jan Masschelein e Maarten Simons. Este conceito está sustentado pelos estudos de Hannah Arendt sobre a responsabilidade do professor como aquele que presenta o mundo aos recém-chegados. Para a análise, fez-se uso da matriz proposta pelo pesquisador colombiano Oscar Saldarriaga para produzir cruzamentos entre as respostas de entrevistas com estudantes e professores e os Projetos Político Pedagógicos e Regimentos das 13 escolas de surdos do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Foi possível perceber o quanto a bandeira de defesa pela escola de surdos está presa às particularidades que a constitui, fragilizando a pluralidade da escola. Enquanto os professores preocupam-se com as lutas do mundo lá fora, os estudantes anseiam pela igualdade proporcionada pela matéria e pelo estudo. Esta tese buscou aproximar, trazer, jogar a escola de surdos para junto das discussões que se tem na contemporaneidade sobre escola. Não com a intenção de compará-la às demais escolas, mas entendê-la, narrá-la, problematizá-la assim como se faz com as outras escolas. O que se defende é aquilo que só a escola faz e que nem a comunidade e nenhum outro espaço é capaz de fazer: a apresentação do mundo aos surdos
