Lipolysis is the biochemical process during which triacylglycerol (TAG) stored in cellular lipid droplets undergoes stepwise hydrolysis to release fatty acids (FAs). FAs produced from lipolysis in adipose tissue are released into circulation, whereas, in other tissues, FAs are used intracellularly.
