In this interview, Sue Searing details her life growing up in New York State as the oldest of three daughters. She was an undergraduate student at New York State University, went to graduate school at the University of Michigan, and eventually worked at UW-Madison from 1981 to 1997, as the Gender and Women Studies Department librarian and as a member of the Curriculum Committee. She grew up in Lockport, slightly north of Buffalo, on the Eerie Canal, where she grew up with a “nuclear” family. Her father was a lawyer prior to working for General Motors, and her mother was a stay at home mom, and then later as a secretary in the Urban Renewal Department in Lockport. She eventually went on to graduate from New York State University after earning a degree in Russian. In 1972, she then attended graduate school at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor and earned another degree to further her employment as a librarian. She then worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1981 until 1997 as the Gender and Women Studies Department librarian and as a member of the Curriculum Committee. She now resides in Illinois with her partner, as they both work for the University of Illinois
