Management of acid mine drainage generating tailings is an important issue for operating mines. An integrated tailings management scenario was proposed to reduce the costs associated with tailings management by, among others, the re-use of concentrator tailings. A sulphide flotation circuit placed before the concentrator tailings disposal in the tailings impoundment would produce a sulphide-rich concentrate and desulphurized (low sulphide) tailings. The concentrate could be used as a component of cemented paste backfill and returned underground for ground support.
