La matière organique dans une filière de biodénitrification sur substrat ligno-cellulosique : composition, évolution et demande en chlore

Conventional treatment of groundwater with high nitrate content, i.e. bio-denitrification on a lingo-cellulose substrate and chlorination, is not sufficient to meet standards regarding levels of chlorination byproducts, particularly trihalomethanes (THMs). One way of overcoming this problem may be to add an aeration step followed by filtration on activated carbon grains and sand.The primary aim of this study was to contribute to determining the identity and origin of organic micropollutants in treated waters. The phenolic fraction extracted from the treated water and the substrate is of particular interest, for the following reasons :- Phenols are know precursors of trihalomethanes ;- Since lingo-cellulose material is used for denitrification, there is a risk that traces of poisonous aromatic compounds will be released.The secondary aim was to determine the extent to which further treatment, using aeration and filtration on activated carbon grains and sand, is effective in eliminating the precursors of chlorination by-products.Gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy were used to analyse phenolic extract of the natural substrate, groundwater and treated waters (denitrified, denitrified-aerated, and denitrified-aerated-filtered). Compounds identified in groundwater belonged to three chemical families :- Phenols and quinines, indicative of decomposing plant material ;- Fatty acid derivatives containing C14, C16 and C18, of plant or animal origin, characteristic of biological activity ;- Organic micropollutants, e.g. phthalic esters.Indicators of biological activity had largely disappeared from denitrified water (presumably because they had been taken up by the biomass), as had accidental pollutants (phthalic esters). However this water still contained phenolic compounds resulting from breakdown of the natural substrate, as well as molecules substituted by t-butyl groups.Une filière conventionnelle de traitement (biodénitrification sur support ligno-cellulosique, notamment la canne de Provence, et chloration) alimentée par une eau souterraine chargée en nitrates est insuffisante pour satisfaire aux normes concernant la concentration de sous-produits de chloration, particulièrement les THM. L’ajout d’une aération suivie d’une filtration sur charbon actif en grains-sable (CAG/sable) constitue une solution pouvant éliminer ces problèmes récurrents. Une comparaison des spectres obtenus par analyse en chromatographie phase gazeuse (CPG) couplée à la spectrométrie de masse (SM) des extraits phénoliques de la canne, des eaux souterraines et des eaux biodénitrifiées et/ou post-traitées a été effectuée. Cette comparaison a permis de vérifier la présence de précurseurs, à structures phénolées, et d’évaluer la capacité du post-traitement pour leur élimination. Sur les eaux dénitrifiées brutes, les résultats obtenus ont montré la présence d’une diversité de composés phénoliques forts consommateurs de chlore. Certains d’entres eux sont des dérivés de la lignine constitutive de la canne de Provence. Les autres sont des micro-polluants d’origine anthropique de l’effluent à traiter ou formés dans le réacteur. L’aération des eaux dénitrifiées brutes semble favoriser l’élimination partielle des précurseurs, notamment à structures phénolées, probablement par biodégradation. En effet sur l’extrait phénolique des eaux aérées, très peu de produits aromatiques ont été identifiés, les composés extraits sont pour la plupart des hydrocarbures linéaires saturés et des dérivés d’acides gras de consommation en chlore faible. Après passage sur charbon actif-sable, on observe une amélioration notable de la qualité de l’eau produite et une diminution beaucoup plus importante des sites consommateurs de chlore vraisemblablement due à la biodégradation et à l’adsorption des précurseurs de THM sur le matériau filtrant
