The combination of port congestion, due in large part to the increasing size of ships, and the reduction in the number of ports call, is opening up opportunities for the creation and development of networks bringing together Major Sea Ports (GPMs), regional ports, land transport operators and shippers. The first prerequisite for the success of this type of network is the digitalisation and interoperability of maritime-port and supply chain information systems. The second condition is a paradigm shift in terms of the economic model, moving from a growth strategy to one of coordination and cohesion of flows that are dispersed rather than concentrated in a small number of ports.
