Starting from the desire to deconstruct the conceptual dichotomies of the metaphysical tradition (all focused on the notion of presence), Derrida came to elaborate a theory of writing that would make it possible to say what cannot be said, to think what lies beyond what can be thought by a classical ontology. For Derrida, questions about writing are intrinsic to questions about being. More than a simple act of existence, we had to ask how, for Derrida, writing is to exist.
