The general fund of material on the life and work of Charles Dickens leaves much to be desired in quality though little to be questioned in quantity. Until as late as 1955 critical commentaries were brief though numerous, and the only really outstanding biography since John Forster (1872-74) is Edgar Johnston\u27s Charles Dickens, His Tragedy and Triumph (1953). Edmund Wilson\u27s The Wound and the Bow (194-7) presents the highly recognized Dickens: The Two Scrooges and Lionel Trilling\u27s more recent study (1952) gives evidence of increase in genuine interest in Charles Dickens and his work and promise of more detailed scholarship.
