Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world, is a group of diseases characterized by progressive optic neuropathy that may lead to distinct patterns of visual field loss. The risk of developing glaucoma is markedly influenced by genetic factors. Adult-onset forms of glaucoma tend to have a complex pattern of inheritance, while early-onset glaucoma (diagnosed before the age of 40) often exhibits Mendelian inheritance pattern.
