Correlations between university students’ volunteer experiences and their expectations about the results of such activities, self-efficacy, and cooperativeness

[出版社版]Correlations between university students’ volunteer experiences and their expectations about the results of volunteer activities, self-efficacy, as well as cooperativeness were investigated. A questionnaire survey was conducted with university students hoping to become school teachers or nursery care workers (N=300). The results indicated that the students’ past volunteer experiences could be classified into two types: (1) service oriented type that focused on work, (2) and interpersonal support oriented type that focused on direct interactions with people. Volunteer experiences of the first type significantly increased generalized self-efficacy, which is a personality trait, and cooperative aspects of cooperativeness. On the other hand, volunteer experiences of the second type significantly increased self-development through volunteer activities and expectations for results of learning at universities. The above results are discussed from the perspective of the process of motivation for volunteer activities and necessity of developing support systems for students’ independent activities at universities
