Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder, primarily characterized by the loss of dopamine neurons in a small, pigmented area in the midbrain called the substantia nigra and their projections to striatum. The loss of striatal innervation by dopamine neurons is the origin of typical PD motor symptoms, such as resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability. In addition, multiple non-motor symptoms were described in PD, including depression, sleep disorder, constipation, and dementia. Despite many years of research, current therapies offer only symptomatic relief, and their efficacy often decreases with disease progression.
