The Congo River Basin (CRB) is the world's second largest watershed in terms of river discharge and drainage area, and therefore plays a significant role in the global water cycle and Earth's climate. Yet, its hydrodynamic and hydroclimatic characteristics remained relatively poorly known mainly due to its complexity and a lack of adequate in situ observations. To overcome this challenge and taking the advantage of the recent advances in earth system sciences, a robust approach based on a combination of in situ measurement, remote sensing techniques associated with numerical hydrological modeling is proposed for a comprehensive characterization of the CRB surface hydrology at a large scale.
