Uranium dioxide (UO2) is the main nuclear fuel used in pressurized water reactors. Understanding its mechanical behaviour is of great interest for nuclear safety. Under accidental operating conditions, the temperature increases considerably (T>1900K) and favors creep deformation, which must be taken into account in the assessment of fuel integrity. UO2 fuel pellets are then subjected to microstructural changes due to irradiation induced defects such as the prismatic dislocation loops (generated by the accumulation of interstitial atoms) that can influence the viscoplastic behaviour of the pellets.
