In all cells the DNA exists in supercoiled form. Topoisomerases regulate the DNA supercoiling allowing essential processes such as transcription or replication to occur. In course of my thesis I focused on DNA gyrase which is unique by its capacity to supercoil DNA negatively. Previous studies suggested that this enzyme was transferred from Bacteria to Archaea via a single HGT. This acquisition must have had completely changed the DNA topology of the recipient archaeon, thus impacting all DNA transactions.
