In France, special prison nursery units and cells are accredited to welcome pregnant women prisoners from their 6 months pregnancy and women prisoners and their children up to 18 months old. During the perinatal period, the environment plays a crucial part on its material, family, cultural and social sides in the emotional and sensory aspects of motherhood identity building, the child's development and the mother-child relationship. Nevertheless, only a few studies have explored the potential impact of incarceration on these mothers and their children.
