Main cellular pathologies of Parkinson’s disease are demise of midbrain dopamine neurons and abnormal inclusions inside neurons and neurites called respectively, Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. The alpha-synuclein protein was one of the first components identified in Lewy bodies. Though the exact link between alpha-synuclein and neurodegeneration is unclear, it is well-established that alpha-synuclein is important for both hereditary and spontaneous Parkinson’s disease. There is convincing evidence for the spreading of alpha-synuclein pathology between neurons.
