Industrial Reconstruction after the Great Kanto Earthquake : Focusing on the Population and Demand for Labour in Tokyo

[出版社版]The purpose of this paper is to substantiate the recovery process of industries in Tokyo after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. Central Tokyo where the damage of the earthquake and the fire was tremendous witnessed serious industrial decline after the disaster. However, it recovered, and the surrounding counties grew, which means the whole of Tokyo grew after the disaster. I planned detailed analyses especially of the reconstruction demand because the boom led by the demand for reconstruction might have given a chance of recovery to the city as well as a chance of growth to suburban areas. For this purpose, I collected several municipal reports, such as reports on the performance of employment offices and on the population trend, and I combined them to understand where the demand existed and how people in the area reacted to it. The analyses show that the reconstruction demand, especially for various services, attracted suppliers into the damaged area and became an anchor for the recovery
