The Role of Judo Instructors and their Method of Teaching : The Role of Japanese Instructors for improving Competition Abilities of Judo

[出版社版]This study aims at identifying the causes of the following problems: -Common practices of AJJF(All Japan Judo Federation) which lacks common sense -Exclusive nature of AJJF only focusing on the Olympic Games or particular schools -AJJF's philosophy which perpetuates dogmatism By eliminating these characteristics of AJJF, reformation of judo in Japan should make progress. This study deals with “cultivating athletes for international tournaments”, “cultivating human resources, which is the final goal of judo”, by means of: “Spirit of Jigoro Kano and All Japan Judo Federation”, “the role of athletes at an international level”, “the role of AJJF instructors”, “human cultivation through judo”. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Grand master Jigoro Kano originally showed judo as education. Presently judo has become a worldwide competitive sport. Therefore, in organizing AJJF, the federation should consider judo as a competition sport as well as a way of human cultivation. 2) Besides reformation of the federation, other focuses for AJJF should be: “cultivations of competitive athletes at an international level”, “incorporate with the ideas of IJF”, “accident avoidance and safety guidance”, “establishing the teaching method for judo lessons as a compulsory curriculum”, “elimination of violence and harassment”, and “Stopping the decreasing number of athletes. 3) AJJF should establish “a task force of strategy” and allocate a chairman, vice-chairmen, and general managers as delegates. Training for athletes is the responsibility of the team manager and staff such as coaches. Each staff member should have a clear vision and be rewarded or punished according to the result of the tournaments, furthermore the staff members should have an affiliation with each athlete's team. 4) International certified coaches should be defined by his/her sophistication and professionalism, meaning “goal orientated”, “historical perspective”, “linguistic ability”, “ability to express oneself”, “communication skills”, etc. 5) The series of recent misconduct by AJJF members can be traced back to its neglect of solving problems such as referees' misjudgment in the final match of men's +100kg category at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, slippery gi, and athletes competing with red or silver dyed hair at the 2003 World Judo Championships in Osaka, even though they were castigated by other countries. 6) Recent Japanese coaching methods of judo for oriented reinforcement should take advantage of sports science such as “sports medicine”, “coaching”, and “training”, while not being caught up only in the idea of “empiricism”, “spiritualism”, “die-hard spirit”, and “intimidation”. 7) Coaching and evaluating Judo should be done from the viewpoint of philosophical aspects of judo, such as development of personal betterment, as well as of the physical aspects such as techniques and potential of athletes. 8) Coaching should be done to nourish the abilities of technique, interest, motivation, attitude, to improve one's way of thinking and judgment, as well as to expand the knowledge and understanding by practicing judo for one's lifetime. 9) In France it is required that instructors “inform the public about accidents” and “not conceal them”. It is necessary for Japan's judo to reform its current stance by educating coaches on risk management and abiding by the law rather than just praising winners. 10) Bushido has an idea of “sokuin-no-jo,” or compassion, from the thought of Mencius, which Inazo Nitobe explained as a characteristic of Bushi. Judo is a peculiar type of budo that has “the way of softness” in which no weapons are used. AJJF has a strong characteristic of sokuin-nojo and AJJF should have sokuin-no-jo, followed by governance and compliance
