Ionic liquids (ILs) are among a few solvents that dissolve cellulose. Dissolution of cellulose in ILs is a relatively new phenomenon, which mechanism has not been fully understood. Solubilization allows exploring properties of individual molecules and chemical modification of cellulose, thereby introducing new properties. The inverse process, i.e. regeneration, occurs due to the physical separation of the cellulose-IL solution into two phases: cellulose (solid) and IL (liquid). The regeneration allows fabrication of cellulosic materials from sources alternative to cotton (e.g. wood) and can stimulate recycling of textile waste and thus have a remarkable impact on society.
