Effects and prospects for the use of cannabidiol as a treatment for anxiety disorders

reservedIl cannabidiolo è il secondo principale componente attivo della pianta di cannabis, e ha dimostrato di essere efficace nel trattamento di svariati disturbi neuropsichiatrici, grazie alle sue diverse azioni sul SNC. Tale principio attivo ha suscitato negli ultimi anni un crescente interesse per le sue proprietà ansiolitiche e antidepressive, senza presentare però effetti psicotropi. Inoltre, grazie al suo profilo di sicurezza, il CBD potrebbe essere un nuovo e promettente strumento per il trattamento dei disturbi d'ansia, i quali sono sempre più frequenti al giorno d'oggi e spesso risultano limitanti, soprattutto per via dei trattamenti attuali che possono presentare diversi effetti collaterali ed essere quindi poco tollerabili. Questa tesi, elaborata attraverso una ricerca bibliografia, ha lo scopo di presentare le principali caratteristiche del cannabidiolo ed analizzare il suo ruolo nel trattamento dei disturbi d'ansia, prendendo in considerazione diversi ambiti, quali la storia degli usi medici della cannabis, gli aspetti botanici della pianta, il sistema endocannabinoide, la farmacologia del principio attivo, l'ansia come patologia, gli effetti del cannabidiolo in stati ansiosi e gli aspetti normativi odierni.Cannabidiol is the second main active component of the cannabis plant, and has proved to be effective for the treatment of various neuropsychiatric disorders, thanks to its different actions on the CNS. This active ingredient has raised growing interest in recent years for its anxiolytic and antidepressant properties, without however involving psychoactive effects. Furthermore, thanks to its safety profile, CBD could represent a new and promising agent in the treatment of anxiety disorders, which are increasingly frequent nowadays and can often be limiting, especially because of current treatments that can present different side effects and therefore couldn't be easily tolerable. The purpose of this thesis, developed by means of bibliographic research, is to present the main characteristics of CBD and to analyze its role in treating anxiety disorders, taking into consideration different areas, such as the history of the medical uses of cannabis, the botanical features of the plant, the endocannabinoid system, the pharmacology of the active component, anxiety as a pathology, the effects of cannabidiol in anxious disorders and current reference legislation
