Motherhood and drug addiction: risk and protective factors in social service work

openTema centrale della tesi è la genitorialità nei casi che riguardano persone tossicodipendenti e le relative conseguenze nei confronti dei minori, verso il quale i servizi sociali e sanitari mettono in atto programmi di prevenzione e intervento con l’obiettivo di assistere i genitori nella gestione della situazione di dipendenza e nello sviluppo delle competenze necessarie, tenendo sempre presente che al centro dei progetti di aiuto messi in atto deve esserci il benessere e la protezione del minore. Con l’ausilio della letteratura di riferimento, viene inizialmente proposta una visione d’insieme su alcuni aspetti principali del Disturbo da Uso di Sostanze, ponendo l’attenzione sulle caratteristiche e le conseguenze fisiche, cognitive e comportamentali di tale problematica nei confronti di donne che vivono la maternità, considerando gli esiti a breve e lungo termine sui figli. Infine, l’attenzione si concentra sui diversi interventi di lavoro integrato che i servizi socio-sanitari possono avviare durante il periodo della gravidanza e del post partum nei confronti delle donne dipendenti e delle famiglie: in tali situazioni è importante un lavoro sinergico che tenga in considerazione la multifattorialità e la complessità delle storie che vanno approcciate dai professionisti non solo da un punto di vista clinico, ma anche fornendo sostegno e accompagnamento ai genitori, in modo tale da evitare negative conseguenze.The central theme of this thesis is parenting in cases involving drug addicts and the related consequences for minors, towards which the social and health services implement prevention and intervention programmes with the aim of assisting parents in managing the addiction situation and in developing the necessary skills, always bearing in mind that the welfare and protection of the minor must be at the centre of the aid projects implemented. With the help of the reference literature, an overview is first proposed on some main aspects of Substance Use Disorder, focusing on the characteristics and physical, cognitive and behavioural consequences of this issue on women experiencing motherhood, considering the short and long-term outcomes on their children. Finally, the focus is on the various integrated work interventions that the social and health services can initiate during the pregnancy and post-partum period with regard to dependent women and families: in such situations, it is important to work synergistically, taking into account the multifactorial nature and complexity of the stories that need to be approached by professionals not only from a clinical point of view, but also by providing support and accompaniment to parents, so as to avoid negative consequences
